Thanks for all the suggestions.  I think I may have identified the
culprit.  I recently set up this PC to go with a new Treo 700w PocketPC
smart phone and I think either ActiveSync or Verizon's Wireless Sync is
generating all the activity.  At least it's not malware, which is what I
was expecting.

If you are a real geek, you can try to make sense out of
systeminternals's pretty nice TCPView.  [I'll just let you know that *I*
never can hardly].  A much better and easier to understand utility or
this kind of thing is 'Netlimiter' -- it is also freeware and, IMO,
makes it much easier to figure out what's going on:
