You're gonna love this...
I have two PCs--one with StarOffice8 (essentially OO with some bells &
whistles) and one without.
On the PC without, using IE6, I get a "Cannot find server or DNS error." (on
the other hand, using Avant Browser (built on the IE engine, using IE's
Internet settings), I get the same thing plus a dialog box allowing me to
save with the .odt extension.
Huh? Is that the only choice the dialog box offered? (Is that what I've been calling a
"File Download" window?)
On the StarOffice PC, using IE6, (Avant not installed there) I get the same
thing, along with a dialog box asking if I want to save the file, WITH a
.zip extension.
Did it offer to open it with StarOfffice?
I did save the file, and double-clicked on it. As you might expect, it
opened in WinZip
I wouldn't have expected that unless IE changed the filetype from ODT to ZIP!
Part of the explanation, I think, is that StarOffice and Open Office use xml
in storing documents, and combine several files into one compressed library
file using a format recognized by WinZip.
Why would IE change the filetype? I gave you a link to an ODT file. It should
have been treated as an ODT file.
When I put www.tutorialsforopenoffice.org/templates.odt in the address box of
IE, the file download window says that the file name is templates.ZIP!!! Why is
that when no other browser wants to change the file name???
Thanks for taking the time to try this.
