I teach high school computer repair beginning and advanced. This
problem that was discussed was turning into a big problem for me, when
the kids would blow out computers in the classroom. I have asthma, so
that didn't sit well. Therefore, I thought of a rule that they could
remember. What the rule about this is "Suck before you blow". This
reminds them to always get out the vacuum cleaner FIRST before blowing
out the computer. For some reason, they don't have a problem
remembering that rule! They always take the PC outside first, too.
One thing that I have also done which works wonders on a "good" PC that
has lots of dust is that I've soaked the boards in rubbing alcohol,
scrubbed gently, and then left to dry for as long as it takes. I've had
very few failures doing this. I guess it's kind of like washing a
keyboard in the dishwasher (which does work, btw).

That reminds me that I once blew twice on a mobo - big mistake,
inhaling all that dust for the second blow! I'm lucky to be alive!
I use a vacuum cleaner now - more fun too - try holding the nozzle
near the cooling fans!
Even when I use my medical air compressor I wear a dust mask & the
job gets done while I'm in my shed with the doors wide open. I try
not to clean out any machines when it's below freezing as it takes
the compressor for every to get going but on those rare occasions I
bring the compressor in the house over night & then do the cleaning
the next day.
