I have a couple of external HDs connected via USB 2.0. Often they
disappear from the system and I have problems bringing them back on line.
I change the location of the USB cable, even to the main USB ports
in the main board, with no joy.
Have you looked to see if the mombo manufacturer has newer USB drivers?
This is exactly why I prefer firewire as USB isn't as Universal as
they claim nor as reliable.
Have you tried different cables &/or power supply?
I have an external Pioneer 107 DVR drive that is both USB & firewire.
Occassionally I've had problems hooking it up via USB on clients
machines but if they have firewire I never have a problem. I'm so
glad that I paid the extra $20 to get the unit in both standards.
If the mombo manufacturer doesn't have newer drivers then maybe the
chipset manufacturer does.
