I have been told by a couple of folks, including the people I bought new box from, that because the new CPU has a different chipset than the old that I can't just swap out my HD's from the old box to the new, which had been my plan. Old CPU is an Intel ?845WN (something like that) and the new is Athlon 3000. As you all probably realize I'm pretty clueless about how computers really work so it will be no surprise when I say this makes no sense to me. I wouldn't have expected the OS to "care" what MB/CPU it was running on. I had expected I would need to "find" the new hardware but that once done, the OS and all the applications would run.

Going from an Intel based system to an AMD based one you may wake up our buddy HAL but even then just install XP from the CD over the top of your existing installation. Save yourself a bunch of time & make sure that you have at least Sp2 slipstreamed if it's not already.

Acccording to GRT the following have useful lists of post Sp2 hotfixes

I like using Autopatcher <http://www.autopatcher.com/> myself.

I had even been naive enough to think that if I wanted to buy a new HD I could use xxcopy (discussion from last on this List) to move the files from the old HD to my USB HD and then back to the new HD.

You can't unplug your boot drive & replace it while the machine is running therefore you have one too many copy tasks here. Just install the new drive as a slave, boot your existing HD, right click My Computer & select Manage, then click Disk Managaement, right click the new drive in the right hand pane, select format, once that is done xxcopy from the command prompt within XP from the old drive to the new one. Once that is done go back to the Disk Management window & right click the new drive & set the partition as Active. Close everything & shut down. Remove old drive & set the slave to master & boot up. If for some reason the drive doesn't bootup then insert your XP CD & boot that & select R at the first screen then press enter at the command prompt to ID your Windows install & type "fixboot". Once that completes the drive should be ready so reboot & if you should get the invalid HAL then reinstall XP from your slipstreamed CD.

So, if I have misunderstood I would be forever grateful because the prospect of reinstalling everything is really daunting.

I wouldn't reinstall unless you wanted to but you certainly don't have to. Remember one can buy an A+ certification most anywhere on the Internet & I get spammed with them asking to buy them all the time. IMHO it's a waste of time.
