Jim - Not to take anything away from the fine, knowledgeable folks here at WINHOME, but IMO you are asking your questions on the wrong forum.
I have previously referred you to the satellite forum at http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/sat and I continue to find that to be THE best site on the web to get help with satellite problems. Asking there rather than here is somewhat akin to seeking the right medical specialist for a specific condition. There is a wealth of information there specific to satellite communications, just as there is on this list for all things Windows. I have been with DirecWay satellite for 18 months now and while it has its limitations, primarily due to the inherent latency, it is so far beyond anything else available to me that I wouldn't even consider going back to dial up. While I suspect there are some things that can be done to your system to speed it up, most of which are outlined at the FAQ section at the URL above (e.g., have you run the LCCU from the DW site?), part of what you describe is just the nature of the beast. At the risk of over simplification, as an analogy, consider 2 people separated by quite a distance and squirting water at each other with fire hoses. When A opens his hose, it takes a significant amount of time for the first water to arc into the air and then to return to the ground where B is (especially if it is a high arc), but as long as the stream is left on, B will receive a steady stream with no apparent delay. The same is true when B sends a stream to A. OTOH, if they alternate brief bursts in each direction there will be a delay for the initial transit time of each burst of water. With satellite internet, DW (and others) have "web acceleration" servers which store site information and help to speed up subsequent links to a given site, but the initial hook up almost always has a noticeable delay. This delay is particularly noticeable with secure sites which have to bypass web acceleration just due to the nature of the beast. You might also try different DNS server addresses. I use 4.2.2.3 and 4.2.2.4 and they have worked very well for me for several months. Again, and based on long membership in each forum, I suggest going to the BBR satellite forum above and see what can be done. As long as a user will work with the people there, it is a rare occasion when a satellite-related problem is not solved. - Bill Hatcher [EMAIL PROTECTED] - -----Original Message----- From: Windows Home/SOHO [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Jim Dykes Sent: Monday, January 30, 2006 20:39 To: [email protected] Subject: [WINHOME] Satellite Internet I've had DirecWay out here in the desert about 8 months now. Haven't ever been happy with it. Although my up/downloads seem to be in line, it appears to just "crawl" from one site to another. I'm thinking my system needs to be optimized. Does this hold water? Or should I take a torch to DirecWay? I don't have much choice out here. -- ---------------------------------------- To Change your email Address for this list, send the following message: CHANGE WIN-HOME your_old_address your_new_address to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Note carefully that both old and new addresses are required.
