I've only had to actually call MS once for an activation issue, so I guess I've been lucky in that regard. I brought my mother's computer home to install a new HD and grabbed one of my install discs for XP. I used her product key, which seemed to work, but it barfed at activation. I think it was my upgrade CD that I used; if I'd used my full CD instead, it may not have even been an issue, but I don't know. I just told the guy on the phone -- when I finally got a real person -- what happened and he authorized the activation.

My first thought was, that was too easy. I probably could have told him anything that sounded plausible (or not!) and he would have done the activation. This is supposed to be an anti-piracy measure? Ha! The pirates just circumvent activation altogether, it's the rest of us that have to jump through the hoops. <roll>

What if the hokey-pokey really is what it's all about?
