First I would suggest that you 'disconnect ( either pull the interface
cable, or the power cable) from one drive,
leaving the one for which you installed the software last and see if that
drive will then work
( remember to set any master/slave /only jumpers as appropriate)
.

Packet writing treats the disc in the CD drive as if it were a hard drive
-Windows Explorer should some space shown on the drive as well as an
indication of the space used
If the disc is shown as having 0 space, then the system is probably not
seeing it as a packet mode disk,
but like a bought-in CD-ROM

That's why I asked about the use in various modes.

Packet writing allows the disc to be written to as if it was a hard drive
partition
 - but you need to format discs first - in the same way as you format hard
drive partitions
- BUT - some of the software will do that format in background - which is
why the system may make you wait for up to 30 minutes when you try to eject
the disc.
That software may also format the disc as the data is written to it -
instead of formatting the disc with 'empty' sectors it may format the disc,
including the required data as it goes, which is faster, but it will still
need to complete the format process

Re re-installing the Ulead software, that may work, and then again, it may
not - see the start of this response
(I found that software supplied with some drives I bought was specialised to
only work with that single drive in the system)
Also - if you are going to use Nero, then you should download and install
the latest fixed version of Nero that your OEM licence will allow you to
use.

Same OS (XP, SP-2 w/ auto-update).

On "box" I repeatedly updated the same files on this very same CD. I'm not
at that machine how so can't be sure, but I wouldn't think the files have
become read-only. I'll check though.

I'll check out the packet writing issue; how do I tell if it is present and
available?

I'm unclear from a couple of the responses to my email. Do I need
packet-writing or not, and if so why? How do I turn it on or off, or
whatever? I have OEM software that came with both drives (Ulead w/ the
Pioneer and Nero w/ the NEC). Neither seems to have a driver option but
just the opportunity to install the OEM version of the software. Assuming
it is as simple as reinstalling one or both of these programs, it is likely
that if I install Ulead, for example, that it should work on both drives and
packet writing will be enabled for both?

I am totally unfamiliar with this concept so I apoligize if my questions
don't make sense.

Also - I would suggest that, unless there is a need to use packet mode for
writing to CD's,
that you change over to using non- packet mode, and use DVD's
RW media if you want to re-use the platters, but DVD' are far more robust,
both the scratch resistance of the reflective surface, and protection of the
dye media
and the DVD format does not have the naming limitations of CD's
