Exact Audio Copy. Can't say enough good things about it. Finished ripping
400+ CD collection to use on my new 60Gb iPOD at Christmas time. Went
through about 5-6 different programs and finally ended up with majority
ripped with EAC. Very easy to use and a lot of horse power if you dive
deeper. Easy setup for using external encoder (I used the LAME encoder with
the preset extreme....some pieces were encoded using preset insane). Uses
freedb for the tag information.
Speaking of mp3 tags, get a copy of ID3 Tagit. This is an excellent program
for manipulating the Tags....and if you have a large collection, this
becomes necessary. If you don't watch the tags, your mp3 player will be a
mess. For example, B.B King or BB King or B.B.King are all recognized as
different artists on my iPOD and I need to adjust them to be sorted as the
same. You are at the mercy of the person who originally entered the
information for the CD into freedb and frequently it needs tweaking.
Good luck! This was a big learning experience. All the programs I've
identified above are free.
