Thanks for the suggestions, Carl. I tried adjusting some of the monitor settings
and that seemed to make a difference, especially in something called "course".
I'll be printing/reading the manual in the next day or two to learn more about
this. Oddly enough the current settings on the monitor work fine with another
computer and video card - I'm using a KVM switch box. The "problem" is with a
nVidia card with 128MB of video memory while a Vanta 4MB cards works fine.

My screen resolution was a little off from your suggestion - I had it set at 
1152
x 864 with a refresh rate of 72. I've since changed that to 1280x1024 and 70.
