OK, here's the deal.
It's an Inspiron 8000 running Win 2000.
According to the online documentation, it supports two Type I or Type
II cards, or one Type III card:
3.3 V and 5 V
68 pins
PCMCIA 16 bits
CardBus 32 bits
Modem/network connectors: Optional factory-configurable RJ-11 and RJ-45
ports for mini-PCI modem/network controller (I don't think she has an
RJ-45, but it's slow going with her finding this out. I'm assuming no for
the time being)
Dell says that the following network drivers are available for download:
3Com 10/100 & V.90 LAN Mini-PCI
3Com 3CCFE575CT 10/100 MB Ethernet Cardbus PC Card
Actiontec V.90/NIC MPCI Combo
Dell True Mobile 1150 Series Mini-PCI Card
Dell TrueMobile 1150 Series PC Card
Dell TrueMobile 1150 Series RG1000 (Wireless Base Station/Residential
Gateway)
Dell TrueMobile 1170 Wireless Base Station
Motorola Bluetooth PC Card
I don't know how much memory she has.
So: Do you think she will have problems trying to set up DSL? I know she
needs a DSL modem for a wired connection, a router for a wireless, and a
network card for wired or wireless. Are there other things? Does she need a
lot of memory? Can someone recommend the best card for her?
Thanks to all of you for your help. Between her and me this is really the
halt leading the blind.
