A friend wrote me off list on how I can get another Microsoft free USB thumb drive to replace the one that blew up because I stuck it in the wrong port. I wasn't trying to diagnose anything as I just wanted to give some data via the port.

Look for the free flash drive on the right hand side.
Must be small, but the price is right...

After one logs in with a MSFT Passport then one has to pass a test about every ones favorite subject, licensing & their is even an faq about it. ;-)

Heck, I passed the test so I guess I don't need my MAPS subscription any more as all those extra licenses are going to waste. <lol>

If a thumb drive does not work, the USB ports are inoperative.

Not necessarily.

This is why I consider this the easiest test.

I've also seen where the guy down the street put the power lead on the wrong connector & it blew out a thumb drive but not where one could see any damage but the drive was no longer usable in any USB port on any machine. So if I were to plug in the blown thumb drive into a USB port I surely couldn't rely on that as being a valid test of the USB port now could I ?

If one is to use a thumb drive as a diagnostic tool make sure it's a small cheap one.
