Subject: Re: [windows] Re: Windows XP phaseout
Microsoft are slowly tightening the screw on licensing ! More and more
they are using piracy as an excuse to increase the restrictions they
place on their users.
This is not a "which came first, the chicken or the egg?) issue. We all know
the CPU is what the motherboard is built to accommodate. I bet Intel told
the motherboard manufacturers to furnish the pins for the 775's, not the
other way around. I doubt the motherboard manufacturers told Intel to leave
off the pins, that they would be on the motherboards.
Microsoft is not required to use logic. In my opinion the CPU represents the
computer more accurately than the motherboard. Why debate when they can
require you to repurchase Windows when you change either the CPU or the
motherboard? So far I have encountered no problems replacing motherboards on
computers I built. Just two days ago I replaced the motherboard, power
supply and video card and the reinstall of Windows XP authenticated without
requiring me to call Microsoft.
I realize those who wish to upgrade their CPU will disagree with me highly.
All they want is to change one component. They certainly do not want to buy
Windows again. We all have different results. I get better results in
selling out and buying a new computer than in spending big bucks on
upgrading a CPU or operating system. Others disagree.
I just wanted you to know that I do not expect to carry Windows XP forward
through 10 years of hardware upgrades with a CPU upgrade along the way as
one poster felt I may be attempting to do. When the CPU changes, I humbly
accept purchasing Windows XP again. I base my opinion of never having a CPU
die, so any CPU change would be a CPU upgraded if this 8 year old track
record continues.
This is the good part. You do it your way and I do it my way and we all
share our opinions here and in the end Microsoft remains the Windows boss.
