I have SBC/Yahoo DSL and I do not use their software. You can if
 you want to but I didn't.  You can set up mail and news 
accounts without using their software.

I was using Win98SE when I got the service so I had to use 
RASPPPOE for the pppoe and when I got the Netgear router I just 
gave it the user ID and password and let it handle the pppoe. I 
have A SpeedStream DSL modem and added the Netgear router later.
