I restarted my Win XP Pro computer and left the room. When I go back, I saw the message
that's in the Subject line, and after a few seconds, it changed to "Do not turn off
or unplug your computer; it will turnoff automatically."

After a few seconds it changed back and the messages went back and forth for
many minutes.

I decided to hit the power switch for a cold boot.

It strikes me that the above behavior may be related to the failed Windows
Defender update that I reported several days ago. Where is that update? How can
I remove it from my machine?

Thanks.
