Now it's funny you say that Wayne..........
When I was in Florida '83 I think I was driving down to Orlando from St
Augustine on the 'back wood
trail' - a rather deserted highway - 2 lane with hardly any gas stations. The
Buick I had was
running low and it was getting dark. Hoping to find a gas station soon I was
backing off and
slowing down to save the fuel which is hard to do when the car is well over
geared and built for the
double nickel speed limit (55).
Suddenly out of the mist I saw a light - just like in ET when the barn door
opened and the light
shone eerily out into the mist. The sign said SHELL (Dutch petrol company in
the US????) and as I
pulled in it looked creepy.
A oldish guy sat on the porch with a cigarette in his mouth wearing bib&brace
overalls. A check
shirt and straw had finished the scene from "the Beverly Hill Billies".
I got out and asked "is the gas self pump or what?"
He answered in a southern drawl "I'll pump..."
As he was filling the car's gas tank I noticed that the pump was measuring the
delivery in
LITRES...!
I said "I see you're going metric here.."
He said, "I don't know about those funny numbers sir but it's $18 please"
Talk about a time warp--------- beam me up Scotty!
Sir Hugh of Bognor

you thought I said but what you thought you heard wasn't
exactly what I said.
