Never heard of 18004memory.com. Thanks for the pointer.

It's called RDRAM a.k.a. Rambus. And yes, it's expensive because it's
proprietary and no longer used in new systems. And no, you can't really
use
any other type.
But you can do better than Dell prices. 18004memory.com lists 512MB for
around $200.

Subject: Dell Precision 340
I have a Dell Precision 340 that takes PC800 SDRam. Until today, I had
never heard of PC800 ram. Unfortunately, Dell wants $480 for a 512mb
stick
of PC800 ram.
Is there a different type of ram I can use on this machine? ANything out
there that will be backward compatible with a slower system like this?
Thanks,
Brian Rudnicke
