Right, it would not install an older dx in xp.
I brought over win386.swp put it did me no good.
Yes, I did fully monitor the install on the win9x machine and at this point
in time I think I am ready to give up on this game.

I doubt that it would install an older dx in xp, I had a game install an
older version of dx and I ended up having to wipe xp :) I'm guessing the
installer is 16-bit and thats the problem :( Did you FULLY monitor an
install on a win9x machine as I suggested ? 2 more options if you MUST
have this game, dual-boot to win9x, or try running a virtual win9x
within xp using VMWare
