Wow, you still do not get it ! It seems you do not comprehend
the significance of Dual Channel performance.

I simply followed the layout for the memory slots. Asus
specifies where to put:
1 of 1 stick
Each of 2 sticks
Each of 3 sticks
Each of 4 sticks goes without instructions as you have to
populate all 4 slots.
A1 and B1 slots are blue.
A2 and B2 slots are black.
The manual I read simply states: Use the blue sockets first.
And they even go as far as stating one dimm may go in *ANY*
socket.
Instruction #6 addresses your question, "Three DDR DIMM's
installed into any three memory sockets will function in
single channel mode.
It does NOT address my question. I asked: "do you really
believe [2048 MB] operating in [Single Channel mode] is the
****same**** as [2048 MB] operating in [Dual Channel mode]?
Do you???
Ok, so I had 4 1024's in there for a few minutes and it read
only 3+GB. Instruction #5 covers this, "When all four sockets
are populated with 1GB DIMM's (total 4GB), the system may
detect onl 3+ GB (a little less than 4 GB) due to the
Southbridge resource allocation."
So what do you recommend?
Use *Dual Channel* mode.
Go back to 2048 MB so I can run dual channel with one set?
Go back up to 3+ GB populating all 4 sockets with 1024's so I
can retain dual channel mode?
Or stay where I am, with Sockets 1, 3 and 2 populated with
1024's making a total of 3072 running in single channel mode?
Maybe I answered my own question by saying I am happy with my
performance with 3072 in single channel mode. Perhaps it is
best for me to leave it alone now, since Windows is not
locking up.
Thanks for helping me to reason on the single vs. dual
channel issues and sending me back to the Asus book,
Your reasoning is faulty if you believe dual channel and single
channel performance is the same. Read up on Dual Channel
memory. Here's a white paper to help you along:
<http://www.kingston.com/newtech/MKF_520DDRwhitepaper.pdf> As
the paper states: "Why pay for a Ferrari and limit yourself to
only using first gear?" I hope you are not using single channel
mode in client's machines just because you do not know about
dual channel mode. But it's your machine and your clients. Do
whatever catches your fancy.
