I don't know about the battery (i often wonder about it though) but i always
use my laptops plugged in when possible because they run at full CPU and
screen brightness. Plus i tend not to see the bubble telling me the battery
is low until seconds before it goes into standby. :(  We have an inverter in
the car and i usually use it instead of the battery.
