Hello
I had a similar problem a few months ago, but it was a bad shutdown
after an AV update
not a system crash. Not included in the below email, but the IE
Favorites and
Outlook Express email and folders disapeared also. My thinking was that
mozilla
did it as the IE favorites were copies of the mozilla bookmarks but OE was
also cleaned, and no other files were affected. No virus was detected
even though
the AV was changed three times (different clients) and 2 rootkit
detectors run.
And the drives were installed in another computer and tested again.
It seems rather single minded to remove 15 to 20 thousand files (email and
bookmarks, favorites) out of over 300,000 files on 3 120 GB HDs.

I had a problem on my computer with the Asus A7N8X DELUXE mb several
weeks before
it failed, using Mozilla 1.7.12 the mail and browser were open and had
a USB HD running.
An upgrade became available for my AV program and I clicked to start it,
this happens often,
but normally this runs and if it need a reboot you are given a choice to
reboot now or later,
it did not give me the choice and did a reboot with all the open programs.
When it restarted I found that all my email and and local folders had
gone missing.
Checking the browser for bookmarks found about a dozen, the original
ones that
showed up on installing the Mozilla program. I had over 8000 bookmarks
and 4000+
emails in the inbox and 30 other local folders.
I was not worried yet as I had 4 backups for nearly all of these, on
the second partition
of of the primary drive, another on the second drive, also on the USB
drive, and another
on CD, but when I went to the backups I found they were missing also and
I had
misplaced the Cd backup.
Ran a complete virus scan and 2 rootkit finders, all negative.
As far as I could tell these were the only files affected, but how
is it possible for
all these files in different locations to be removed, did Mozilla do it ?
I ran a recovery program, PC Inspector File Recovery, and recovered
bookmarks
approximately the same size as the backup files but on putting them back
in mozilla
found that there were many duplicates some had 12 copies, some had the
name but
no location data and am still removing duplicates, looks like possibly
1000 recovered.
As for email nothing was found at all, still looking for backup disk.
I thought the USB drive was safe but will have to change my backup
strategy.
Thank You Joe Harrison
