Indeed, I had "migrated" using the upgrade method (b), which seemed a
whole lot easier.
Then, when the problem cropped up, I formatted a partition and did a
pristine install (a) and subsequently added data and programs.

Again, you are right in that the "hang" happens in normal mode and I
think not in Safe mode (not 100% sure, because I have not done much
document work in Safe mode).

So, no peace for the wicked, I will have to use Autoruns and start
turning things off one by one, till the hang goes away!!
