Are you sure that your graphics card has a DVI port even though it
supports both vga and DVI? I've never heard of a graphics card that
supports DVI without it having a DVI port which does not make sense to me.

The graphics card is an nVidia GeForce FX5200XT with 128 MB of
dedicated video memory while the new monitor is a 19" Dell UltraSharp 1907FP.

I haven't found anything (yet) on the nVidia site that talks about the card. The
monitor came with the correct DVI cable.

The computer is an HP a640n and it was an HP support person who told me that it supported DVI. I don't see any DVI port on the graphics card, so maybe I was told
wrong. Do you suppose.... :-)

Good possibility that you received false information, given the level of expertise of the support staff for most companies.

I'd just use the monitor with a VGA cable and not worry about it. I have 3 LCD monitors, one I'm using with a DVI cable and the other 2 I'm using VGA. I can't tell any difference in the displays between the VGA and DVI in normal use.
