Hi Jim,

If you want to use video, skype and MSN messenger are good options. I have
used both and have found the voice quality of skype to be better. Another
option you may consider is to use a mobile phone with an instant messaging
application. This may indeed depend on the service provider.

Another issue that you may run into is finicky system administrators in
college. It is unlikely that instant messaging applications would be blocked
but one can never tell. I have found skype to be the best in getting around
these blocks. Google talk uses the same engine has skype so that should be
okay to in terms of voice quality.
