I was a little early on the working ok report because when it was
started with the internet
connection, it started the SOS and hung on the windows splash screen,
the one before the
logon screen. Managed to get avg update after 5 restarts, and windows
after 12 more
restarts from hangs not windows restarts, and now it is back to changing
the bios and
showing no hd installed and now hangs in the bios screen as well.
The cpu voltage was set to automatic and the voltage was set at
1.650v the lowest
setting, actual voltage was 1.66 to 1.68v. There are 8 choices in
manual, but before I
could make any change it hung again, and cannot get the hd to show again.
This is no. 20 of computers that I havt built and have had many
problems
but nothing like this POS. Once had a cable fall off of a hd, after 2
years of nearly
flawless opperation, started it and failed because of no hd present,
the cable was
instaled properly, possible vibration in the hd, cable was reinstalled
and worked
fine for 2 more years more until the hd was replaced with a larger one.
The machine
is still operational today but don't use it much as it has win 98se
installed and has
128mb ram the max for that mb, so can't run xp.
This was to be the best with more ram (1GB) and more hd storage (240GB)
than all the others put together. It also has had more work invested
than all the
others combined and is nothing more than an expensive doorstop.

How can changing the IDE header change the opperation of the
computer like
this, if it has???
Sounds like a bad connection within the header to the actual cable.
This happens all too frequently if you ask me & is one reason why when
diagnosing disk hardware problems for clients I open a new pkg of
cables & throw them in just in case. Years ago one of the magazines
deliberately cut a cable then took the machine to various mom/pop
shops to see how many that diagnosed the problem correctly & the out
come wasn't very good. IIRC larger shops did slightly better & I
believe that's because they probably have a better diagnostic
checklist that they make their trained monkeys go thru but give them a
software problem & they almost always choke or just tell the client to
use the restore disk.
