I thought about Bob's suggestion some more and decided to revisit Skype's
forum to try it once more. They put me through all kinds of excercises that
repeated all the steps I had taken on my own and nothing changed the
situation until a layman suggested that Skype did not like any USB devices
especially Logitech's. That gave me an idea and I tried to plug the headset
into different USB ports, but it was not until I hooked up the front panel's
audio connectors and plugged the headset into one of the two front USB port
that everything worked!
