So the bottom line is that there is *NO* way to use XP/Pro as a standard 
print server [in the normal sense of the term: *NO* other print server I 
use requires a user/password, not any of the Unix servers, or the Axis 
server, or the built-into-the-printer servers, etc].  That is, you 
*always* need to provide a password protected account on the /Pro system 
for the remote systems trying to print to use... UGH!  I wonder if I can 
find a Unix-style LPD I can run on my /pro system and let *IT* handle the 
printer sharing....

I've checked that, but I didn't see anything on the security tab that 
related to sharing the printer -- I have what I suspect is the 'usual' 
settings: admin accts have all privs, "EVeryone" has only "print" 
privileges.

I assume you're referring to XP/Home here..  And that's not exactly true: 
all of the ACL controls are available in /Home, just a PITA to get at 
[now if you're talking *policy* management, then yes: they really 
crippled/screwed up XP/Home].
