I lived in Vienna (Wien) from 1950-1953. Actually dropped out of school and
traveled around Europe by myself, staying in Pensions, with free train
transport due to a diplomatic passport. Much better education than an
American high school. Father was US Air Attaché to Austria. This was at the
time of the 4 power control of Vienna. Some may remember the movie
"Four men in a jeep" with the Harry Lime theme. I Never took French in
Europe. Street stuff.
I opted for it in DC(Bethesda Silver Spring) cuz it was easy.

Even tho I already had 3yrs of French in a UK school when we moved State
side I switched from French to Latin because the French teacher spat as
he spoke while I was sitting in front of the class so I transferred to a
Latin asap.
Sounds like we had similar schooling. I had a year of French while
living in Europe. When we moved Stateside I switched to two years
of Latin. Many people think of Latin as a useless dead language, but
it is the basis of much of our scientific and medical terminology, as well
as giving me a better understanding of grammar in general.
