I don't know if any updates do come from a third party ! I see this as
a tool that can be used for both good and bad !
If the tool itself is secure and only goes to M$'s own servers then
fine ! My worry would be if it could be subverted to become viral.
Its not, as far as I am aware open source, so it wouldn't come under the
same scrutiny !! It does however appear to be some duplication of M$'s
own update system ! Which can be guaranteed to be only from M$ !!
I do see another side to this ! Particularly in view of WGA and
bypassing M$ checks ! Piracy springs to mind ! and the number of
methods of circumvention that has suddenly become available !!!!
