Is it true that all computers on a LAN must have the same WORKGROUP
name for File/Printer sharing to work?
If all the machines in question are running XP, then no, they do not
have to be in the same workgroup. Just enable simple file and
printer sharing. If it is still not working, a firewall is likely
blocking access.
Opening the firewall varies by which one is in use. With the XP
firewall, checking the box for File and Printer Sharing on the
Exceptions tab is all that is required. If it's a third party one,
such as Zone Alarm, the local network should be added as a trusted
zone. Setting the IP range to 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.255 should do
the trick for a Linksys router; others use different ranges. Just
check the documentation for whatever brand is in use.
Thanks, Tony. I have ZA on the two permanent machines and Comodo on the foreign
one. The permanent ones are using File and Print Sharing successfully so the
problem must be with Comodo.
