Agree with most of what you said, however, I didn't understand the reference
to the Windows.old. As I understand it the windows.old is for taking an
existing installation and protecting it.

Did you not put the beta on a new partition? If so, that would be too risky
for me to try. In fact I'm so paranoid, I put it on it's own drive <g>!

True. I backed up all of my data 72GB worth of it videos, mp3 files and docs
to
DVD-DL +R disk. I hate it when Windows Vista Beta 2 insists on copying your
applications
to D:\windows.old becuase then you have to copy every application back to
your original
D:\Program files folder. Arrrgggg!

I had to reinstall my nVidia Nforce2 mobo drivers for the PCI bridge in
order to install my
netgear WG311T wireless card to work. My SB Audigy 2.0 I have not gotten
that to work yet
as per reinstall it again to get it to work I hope it does tonight. But I
have a slight problem with getting
my WG311T wireless card to work I have to connect to my netgear WGR 624
router by right clicking
on the WG311T icon in the system tray click Connect To and select WGR 624 to
get the router to refresh
the ip in order to connect. I'll think I have to set up the router to
refresh the IP DHCP address automatically
so that I won't have to go though this everytime I want to connect to the
net.

The unique features that impress me are the Aero glass UI which you can see
through
a top application window to the windows underneath it. Also I find that the
3D cascade
and flip effect is totaly cool! Come to think of it I bet Apple OS X doesn't
have this feature
yet!

Security is the real issue in WIndows Vista Beta 2. The firewall has been
beefed up slightly but
not much more and works the same in Windows XP. But I find the user account
prompts very annoying
for every program install, file copy, setting, configuration and
installation. The background screen would grey
out leaving the prompt window on top highlighted in focus.
But the advantage of this is that a non-admin user would not be able to
install or change anything in Windows
Vista without the blessing of the Administrator which is very ideal not only
in a work environment but its very best
use for keeping the kids from messing up the configuration and installing IM
programs on your PC period.
Now that's what I call total security. Its about time.

Let's see. It's beta so you expect it to be bit rough around the edges.
Backup your family jewels before playing with it because IMHO it really is
still not ready for prime time.

Installing networking drivers and audio drivers was problematic given the
age of the MOBO, but they did work. Windows couldn't locate anything, and
nvidia has some vista ready stuff but it wouldn't work with my setup.
Finally broke out the drivers that came with the motherboard and they took
after some grumbling from Vista. Sound was restored as were network
connections.

Under the hood, security is definitely strengthened but I'm not sure why
M/soft seems intent on locking everything down. The user account control is
just plain annoying. You can't make any changes without being second guessed
and questioned.

More later as I continue to play...
