This will also occur when using Win2K and periodically using a keyboard or
docking station if you use number lock on the keyboard. I am an instructor
at a large company and all of our instructors have laptops. When we are at
our desk, we use docking stations so we have larger monitors and full size
keyboards. I like having number lock on when using the keyboard, so the
keypad is active. When I log off of win2K and take the laptop to a
classroom to use for a presentation, when I log back in win2K remembers my
setting and that's when I have to use the (in our case) shift-numlock key to
turn it off so all the letters work the way they should.

I don't remember exactly when this remembering behavior started, but I do
know that about 3 years ago many of our instructors would get locked out of
their computers and/or the network because they would take the laptop to a
classroom, logon to the system (at which time win2k 'remembered' it was lst
used with numlock on) and during a break the screen saver would kick in
which would require them to enter their password to resume, and not knowing
about the numlock feature, they would type in their password, which because
of numlock was NOT what they thought they were typing, and after three wrong
attempts would be locked out. This required a call to the service desk to
reset the password, disrupted class, and was all in all a pita.

Contrary to the adage "those who can't, teach" we have learned and this is
seldom a problem anymore!
