Mine doesn't show an "Internet connection" either, but it
does show a Local Area Connection, which is the NIC.
You can control the system tray icon by right-clicking on the
connection, select Properties, check the "Show icon..." box.

DSL connection, alcatel speedtouch 576 router connected to 1 of 2 NICs
(NIC 2 is disabled in device manager), xp pro sp2. I have no "internet
connection" icon in network connections, (although I did see 1 briefly
at 1 point), and hence no connection icon in the system tray. How can I
restore the tray icon? The connection works perfectly, it's just a
nuisance having to go into the router's config to verify the "state" of
the connection when I want to. I have tried these steps, didn't help:
