I got the pictures. Found the serial cable, and installed the Camedia
software. It worked slowly, but - It WORKED :-)
Will try to find out if the card reader is faulty. Thanks, all, for help.

But I use a canon and the pics are actually in a separate folder
inside the main canon folder. So they are not readily apparent at
first glance.
