Thanks for the reply Bernie.  I'm a little embarrassed to admit I don't 
understand the significance of what your suggestion and have no idea how to 
check and/or fix the problem.  Help again???

Check that you don't have a [broken] proxy set up or otherwise in the 
path.  As a general rule, HTTPS: will go 'around' a proxy [because 
otherwise the certificates don't work] and so will often still work even 
if vanilla-http is having trouble.
