Don't blame you ! I don't remove the heatsink unless I have to ! If I
do then I usually replace the whole assembly. At least then you know
that you are going to get a good thermal contact via new phase change
material.

I am not overly impressed with the postage stamp size wafers that you
can buy. They seem to dry up over a fairly short time, then you can't
remove the backing film without the stuff cracking off !

This sounds a little different to the ones I have seen ! Incidentally
AVC make some of the Intel heatsink fan assembles !

I have not had to resort to using a hacksaw at any time on any of the
assemblies that I have come into contact with !

If that is the case then simply replace the whole thing with a standard
heatsink fan assembly !

Thats one of the problems with proprietary equipment ! Much better to
go "Open Source" ;-) Less costly all round !

Probably not !

Cooler and others do make round fans with and without lug fastenings.
Unless you are ordering in tens or twenties its not worth the hassle of
paying carriage or stocking them !

In any case Its a matter of expedience and profit ! Make $5 changing a
fan or $3 changing an assembly, that takes longer !!
