Yep, stop trying to compress them. Uncheck the box for compress old files in
Disk Cleanup. It's a PITA, takes too long as you've discovered, and seems to
me to save minimal space given today's HDD sizes.

When I run disk cleanup it shows 35,443 KB of "Compress old files" that it
will not remove or compress. It will show more than the above but it always
reverts back to 35,443 KB, it seems froze. Any suggestions?
