Chuck, I asked because I expected the waveform of the
"AC" coming out of the generator to be too dirty.
The waveform coming out of a UPS is too dirty for a surge
protector, but clean enough for a computer...
(Computers sort of don't mind the waveform APC UPSs send
them... It is a little more*?* square IIRC...)
The question was about special ratings for generator "uses""...
As far as your answer about the UPS supplying decent power
to the computer while the generator was running...
I'm not thinking that would happen...
Reason #1) Since I said I was getting 121V AC out of the generator,
the UPS would just be passing through what it got...
Reason #2) The UPS WOULD be surge protecting it though,
(clamping it under 330v or so IIRC), BUT this goes back to the other
half of my original statement...
If the generator is putting out dirty power, (and it must be, since
even refridgerators don't tolerate it well), then putting a UPS
(or "any" surge suppressor) down stream of the generator would
quickly "use up" (AKA burn out) the surge protection...
FWIW: Each time a surge protector "takes a hit", it gets a little "used up".
If it takes enough "hits", eventually it will become "disfunctional"...
Some of the better ones are monitored and the light goes out when they
are at "end of life"... Others are designed to short out, and that brings
the problem to your attention REALLLL fast... (Note: That second type
is generally used to protect against lightning specifically...)
I'm hoping one of the electrical engineering types (if any) on the list
will chime in... If not, I'll call my friends at Kema...

I guess I'll have to put a "scope" on the output of the generator, if I want
to know what is really happening...

If you power a UPS with a generator, should it make any difference? It would
seem that the UPS would provide decent and regulated voltage to the computer
and monitor. The plus here is that the UPS would keep the computer going
while you are switching over to the generator and then back to normal power.

Are there certain "specs" to look for when using a generator on sensitive
electronics? I was afraid to even turn on the TV with what I have now...
(But, I "did" get to finally use that battery radio I bought for Y2K...)
