The first home computer I bought was a Packard Bell back in early '95. It came with a voice modem and answering software. It actually worked quite well, rarely failing to answer/record a call, properly receive a fax, or hang the line up when complete. It would even share the COM port without balking, so my online dialing software worked fine, too. I was even able to make the switch from WFW3.11 to Win95 after installing a patch. Later, I added a faster modem for data and left the old one for voice/fax, assigned them different COM ports and all was well.

Then, in 2000, I bought a new computer and things were never the same. I used trial versions of several diffferent packages, and swapped modems a few times, but could never make things work as reliably as before, if at all. I soon gave up and bought an answering machine.

What if the hokey-pokey really is what it's all about?
