PART 3 of 3 If I run IE and go to help about, it says error 89 I think and you can see behind the error dialog, it doesn't list what version of IE is installed, nor the service pack level, those fields are blank. As an aside I remember now that when I went to Windows update site after getting back into windows, it said you need to be running later version of IE than 5.5 for best results. I think I tried to repair IE at that point, but got the same errors as above. After several rounds of Windows updates, the Microsoft update site no longer gave that message and I assumed all was good until this last problem cropped up.
So, how the heck do I fix IE in this case? None of the suggestions for forced reinstall have worked. Ideally I want to rip IE out completely and then reinstall it completely. The machine will be wiped and XP Pro installed in September with a bunch of other changes in IT in the office. It just needs to limp along for another 4 to 6 weeks. At this point there are only 2 outstanding issues, the IE problem with usernames and passwords and when you go into add/remove programs in control panel, you see an icon for each application but no text or names. Client can get back with the add/remove problem, but not without IE as there are several work related site, including the citrix login, that REQUIRE IE to work properly or at all.
