I finally got Norton 2004 off of the computer and low and behold, every
problem it had cleared up. Thank goodness it expired and was ready to be
removed!!! Now the firewall shows correctly and no need to mess with the
hosts files.
  Jim thankx to all

This could be another symptom of scumware.

The windows firewall would not keep you from getting to certain sites.

Subject: Windows Firewall on and off

Have a PC that says the Windows XP Pro firewall is ON in the Security Center
main window, but if you go the the bottom and chose "Windows Firewall"(the
place to turn if on or off), it says that it is OFF. Am having a problem
connecting to some websites, and cannot get it to say "OFF" in both screens.
IS it on or off?? How do I get it OFF in both screens?
  Jim
