When I put that on a command line and substitute the path to an MP3 file
for %L, it opens Media Player and plays the file. That kind of implies
that the file name is not being put in place of %L in your machine. I
can't imagine why that would be.

As a WAG, I've only ever seen %1 for the substitution variable. Could it
be that %L is wrong? Something is certainly wrong.
