My apologies to the late Douglas Adams for cribbing his famous book title.
The problem here is not the signature line itself, but what happened
afterwards between a few list members. The rules for this list are fairly
relaxed, but one ironclad rule is that posters may NOT impugn (attack) the
character of another person publicly on the list. It is that event that
prompted Bill to react quickly to cool that down, and he was rapidly supported
by 2 other moderators.
Mostly that kind of "timeout" is handled privately, off-list. Sometimes, as
here, it is necessary to do it in a more public way. It is uncivil behavior
on the list that may subject someone to discipline, not signature lines.

I back all of the moderators because they are a good team and they do a great
job at keeping the list atmosphere relaxed yet lively, informative and
on-topic.

I couldn't say it better myself. The amount of on-list and off-list traffic
on this so far has been far more than the matter deserves.
