Don't see anything that tells me if I have an unused connector.
PATA & SATA are both IDE so which has the primary IDE channel? Usually
the primary channel is under the controller it belongs to.
If you right click on the Ultra ATA controller in DM then select
Properties then you could see Primary & a Secondary channel. Each
channel should supt 2 drives. A secondary channel could be turned off
in the system's bios as well.
PCI bus 0, device 3, function 1
Nothing about channels
That's one thing against the brand name boxes is that you don't
usually get a mombo manual with the system but you probably could get
one thru Dell's website as I did with my L400.
OBTW if you only have 1 SATA HD in the 8400 you can install a 2nd one
or 3rd or 4th but from the pics on their website I'd say they only
have the Primary channel for PATA drives.
Oh yah, the website with probably all you need to know about your
hardware is at
<http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8400/SM/parts.htm#wp1054037>
&
<http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8400/SM/techov.htm#wp1052739>
Thanks.
FWIW I just went to <http://www.dell.com/> & at the top right of the
page you'll see a pull down that says Products. Well imagine my
surprise when I click the down arrow & it lists Technical Support so I
pasted Dimension 8400 in the empty field next to the pull down then
the search results only gave me 1819 Results. Admittedly I had to go
all the way to the 3rd page to find some one that was asking a HD
question.
I tried that. 99.9% irrelevant.
