After a bit of experimentation, I've found a use for the read-only box
for directories. It seems that if you put a check in that box, then
click "apply", "read-only" is set for every file in the directory!
Likewise, if you set the box to empty and non-gray then click "Apply",
it will clear the read-only attribute from every file in the directory.
The box for the directory still comes up gray the next time you show it.
So the appearance of the box does not imply anything about the files in
the directory. But the box can be used as a quick way to set or unset
the read-only attribute for *all* files in the directories. Presumably
this would work for all files in the entire directory tree also, if you
selected "Apply to this folder, subfolders and files" when prompted.
