Heck if at all possible I tell kids
not to buy a laptop at all but rather a desktop system & even then to
get a Kensington lock for it.

Some colleges require laptops.

My kids had desktops (including the one i got the laptop for her to
use this summer - the laptop is here, the desktop at college). My
reason was that 90% of the times they'll use it as a desktop machine
and won't take it to classes. Many want a mouse and full keyboard on
their desk... and if they add a bigger monitor, what is the point to a
laptop if they don't use it as a laptop much? The desktops are
generally more powerful, with bigger drives and have more features (or
more slots to add features).

As for theft issues - it's not rampant, but happens. Damage due to
liquids(daughter) or dropping seems to happen as much (friend of same
daughter). She traded me of my old laptop when i replaced it - she had
limited deskspace and a CRT monitor (LCDs were still expensive back
then).
