Well from what I've seen and read, it seems to be the same class of technology, some way to restrict what the recipient/end user can do with the data and from what little I can surmise, there is some overlap between the DRM and IRM technologies. > You just negated c) above with that last line. True, I wouldn't say it has limits with external users, I'd say it's useless with external users unless you have control over the external computers, which is generally unlikely even with close business partners. I guess my concern is layering on additional technologies, when there are already so many useful security technologies in place that can probably be pieced together to give the same effect without the drawbacks. > The last I knew just because communication isn't 2 ways is not equal > to zero communication otherwise why does anyone create a website? Hmm, good points, I'll run that by them, in some cases these are contracts and other legal docs, so I suspect a phone call or some other method is probably required anyways. From what little I understand about their workflow, it seems some documents are sent internally for electronic comments, then sent externally for the same kind of comments before coming back to the office for more internal comments and then finally being issued in pdf or html format. As to communications being 1 or 2 way and websites, typically we don't expect the same kind of collaboration with web sites as we do with office documents. If someone had a way to put those 2 together securely and with regards to privacy issues, that'd be really cool. > If your client has to pass docs back & forth to their clients that > much maybe their client ought to get Office 2k3. They deal with many external organizations running a mix of office versions, plus they themselves run a mix of office versions. We just got 20 licences for 2003 from Techsoup, however that won't be enough to upgrade the entire office :-(, and they are at their MS ordering limit from Techsoup. > I was also going to recommend a SPS [SharePoint Server] be set up for > your client to share docs with their clients but I believe that > requires Office 2k3 on both ends to a point as well. Actually it doesn't, however if you want all the colloboration features, you get best results with 2003 and IE. You can using firefox and older versions of outlook. It's funny you mention SPSS as I am involved with a SPSS deployment for another client. I am setting up the infrastructure so that the SPSS team can do their bit. I might ask them about this. > While discussing other apps is allowed I'm not sure there is anything > that secure but I hear that Nix & OS10 are so much better than > Windows but they are beyond the scope of this list. I wouldn't say they are necessarily better or more secure, they're just different tools for the job. I already use both in my day to day work, Unix (BSD) and Linux more so than OSX. > Sorry I don't have any idea what else to recommend & hopefully other > list members will have some better ideas.
