Firstly, with delayed write errors - turn off write cache
I almost always do that first, and NEVER let that be on, but fear
I might have forgotten... Since it is an engrained habit, I did not
even think of it...
I guess Inever looked, because this does not happen "only" on shutdown
where I might expect it more, but happened several times (or so)
during the operation of the machine.
Internet Explorer was VERY slow in logging the contents of the drive,
(slow display, if logging is the wrong term), just before the errors.
Then after a couple errors, it would only show one folder out of dozens.
After an overnight "rest", a cold boot showed ALL folders, and the same
Icon...
I tried to copy some files "locally" but access was restricted... (I do not
restrict anything so this was odd...) These were folders I created long
ago myself, not special OS ones with all sorts of permission and access
rules about users etc...
The SAME files would open however... (I thought that was very odd...)
When I saw I could have limited "use" of the drive, I disconnected it and
started asking questions. I did not want to "wear it out" while I figured out
if limited info could be gotten from it...
If nothing else, I need to see what I lost, even if I can't save it...
(Second, answered above)
I "should have" mentioned eariler, that this ICON showed up
the minute I hooked this drive up a week ago, and it was working
perfectly (and with that ICON) until last night. (Friday night.)
Thirdly, Windows could be using the icon to indicate that the drive has been
'determined' to be operating in a unusual manner - such as read only, or
working through a different controller mode to the normal onboard IDE -
perhaps the icon is for a remote/network/firewire/SCSI connected device -
Good point... It was "last used" on a MB port WHEN it was a boot drive.
It is now being run as a strictly data drive hooked up to a paddle card,
a Maxtor/Promise UltraATA133TX2 with full OS support and proper drivers.
(They could be corrupted I guess...) I have hooked up a dozen drives to this
card with no problems... All the other drives would have been almost the same
as this one, but different ages... I have never seen the "funny ICON" before...

Time to switch the drive to a MB port.......
Thanks, I should have done that first...
