You had 4 hours left on the DVD after you've deleted what you already had
watched from that disk.
You set it to record 4 hours from 5pm stoped it at 7pm which is already two
hours worth of recorded
material. Waited until the set top DVD recorder finished writting the data to
the DVD disk then at 8:30 you
continued recording on from that point for another 2 hours which it should have
stoped at 10:30 rather than 10:00pm.
From what I've just understood you only had less than 30 minutes on the DVD
disk to record on since you
restarted recording at 8:30pm which for another two hours the recording should
have stopped at 10:30pm
not 10:00PM. This is why it stopped recording at 10:00PM becuase you had less
than 30 minutes left to record
on the DVD.
Since that's the case either the DVD did not leave a bookmark to append the
second recording or fully closed the lead-out at the end of the last recording
which had 30-minutes truncated from that disk when the recording ended at 10pm.
This could be why you report that there or 32mb of data on the DVD.

What happened you say?
Last night I didn't get to see all the previous shows on the disk, so deleted
what I did watch and that left 4 hours remaining. Set it to record the 4 hours
from 5pm. Stopped it around 7pm and changed channels - had to wait a few
minutes while it writes stuff. Then at 8:30 let it record the next 2 hours.
For some reason it stopped recording around 10pm, and it started to write stuff
again, but this time it apparently failed and then asked me (30 min later) if I
wanted to format the disk as it wasn't formatted properly!!
Slipping the disk into the computers DVD player, the file system revealed only
32 mb of data was on the DVD.
Any ideas?
