Then again - it may be just that your system was slow in completing the
closedown, and 'free'ing of all the resources acquired by a program
so just wait a while and try again

For real pains that won't go at all - not even in safe mode, move all you
want to keep to a different directory structure, and try DOS with the 8.3
type short filename to kill the directory containing the bad file .
